November 2013 Update

The summer is over, fall is in the air, and the Palatine Concert Band is hard at work, preparing for a new concert season.   We’ve got some very exciting news to share and we hope you’ll be pleased with our plans and the upcoming season.

Most importantly, we’re very excited to announce that Dr. Frederick (Rick) Lowe has been selected as the new band director for the Band.  Dr. Lowe is the currently director of ensembles at Loyola University Chicago, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and basketball pep band, and also teaches a course introducing the art of music listening.

Dr. Lowe earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then served as the assistant band director at Lake Zurich (IL) High School, where he directed the Concert, Symphonic and Marching bands and taught music theory and electronic music composition. Upon leaving Lake Zurich, he earned his master and doctor of music degrees in conducting at Northwestern University, studying with primary teacher Dr. Mallory Thompson. While at Northwestern, Dr. Lowe guest conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He also assisted with the “Wildcat” Marching Band and the men’s basketball pep band.

Our first concert of the season, and Dr. Lowe’s debut with the Palatine Concert Band, will be Sunday November 10 at 3:30 pm in Cutting Hall in Palatine.  Please make note of the new start time.  Our Sunday concerts will begin at 3:30 pm this season.  We hope that the new time will be more convenient for you and your friends.  Let us know what you think.

We have a great lineup of tunes planned for you with a wonderful mix of new and classic band literature.  Our selections will include:  Be Glad Then America, When Jesus Wept, and Chester – originally entitled New England Triptych (William Schuman); Huldigungsmarsch, (R. Wagner); Elegy for a Young American, (Lo Presti), Polka and Fugue, (Weinberger), Molly on the Shore (Grainger), and Nocturne (Scriabin).

Our annual holiday concert will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm, and will feature our tribute to the holidays and the many different ways they are celebrated through music.  Looking forward to the New Year, our spring concerts will be held on Sunday March 14, 2014 at 3:30 pm, and Sunday May 4, 2014, also at 3:30 pm.

All concerts take place at Cutting Hall, 150 East Wood Street, in Palatine.   Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students/seniors, and are available online athttp://www.cuttinghall.org/palatineconcertband.htm or at the Cutting Hall Box Office.  Additional information about the band can be found online atwww.palatineconcertband.org, and on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/palatineconcertband

Thank you for your on-going support, and we look forward to seeing you at Dr. Lowe’s debut concert on Sunday, November 10.  And remember the new start time:  3:30 pm.
