March 2014 Update

Dear Friend of the Palatine Concert Band,

Welcome to 2014 as we kick off the second half of our indoor concert season.  We hope you were able to join us for one or both of our first 2 concerts under the direction of newly appointed conductor, Dr. Frederick Lowe.  Thank you so much for making us a part of your musical experience – there’s nothing like live music to warm you on a cold winter afternoon.

Despite the extreme cold and snow that has defined this winter season, the band has been hard at work putting together a strong program to usher in the Spring.

Our next concert is just around the corner on Sunday March 16, 2014 at 3:30 pm in Cutting Hall, 150 East Wood Street in Palatine.  With a mix of modern and classical pieces, the band will excite and inspire you.  In tribute to the Olympics, the program will have a clear international flavor.   Our selections will include: Festive Overture, Shostakovich, arr. Hunsberger;  Divertimento for Band, Persichetti;  Italian in Algiers, Rossini arr. Cailliet; Variations on a Shaker Melody, Copland; Seis Manuel, Hanson; and Amazing Grace, Ticheli, as well as a few other surprises.

Looking forward to Spring, our last concert of the indoor season will be Sunday May 4, 2014 at 3:30pm, also in Cutting Hall.   All indoor concerts take place at Cutting Hall, 150 East Wood Street, in Palatine.   Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/seniors, and are available online at http://www.cuttinghall.org/palatineconcertband.htm or at the Cutting Hall Box Office.

In June, we’ll begin our normal summer season with outdoor concerts on Wednesday June 11, July 9, and July 30 at the Fred P Hall Amphitheater262 E. Palatine Road, in Palatine – all start times are at 8:00pm.  The summer season would not be complete without our sojourn to the North Shore – Wilmette (Wallace Bowl at Gillson Park) onThursday July 3, and Evanston (Lagoon at Dawes Park) on Thursday, July 4.  We hope you will be able to join us for the balance of the indoor season as well as the summer evenings.  All our outdoor concerts are free!

Additional information about the band can be found online atwww.palatineconcertband.org, and on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/palatineconcertband

As always, thank you very much for your continued support and patronage.  If it weren’t for you, we would not have a reason for being here.  We look forward to seeing you onMarch 16th at 3:30pm in Cutting Hall.

With Best Regards,

November 2013 Update

The summer is over, fall is in the air, and the Palatine Concert Band is hard at work, preparing for a new concert season.   We’ve got some very exciting news to share and we hope you’ll be pleased with our plans and the upcoming season.

Most importantly, we’re very excited to announce that Dr. Frederick (Rick) Lowe has been selected as the new band director for the Band.  Dr. Lowe is the currently director of ensembles at Loyola University Chicago, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and basketball pep band, and also teaches a course introducing the art of music listening.

Dr. Lowe earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then served as the assistant band director at Lake Zurich (IL) High School, where he directed the Concert, Symphonic and Marching bands and taught music theory and electronic music composition. Upon leaving Lake Zurich, he earned his master and doctor of music degrees in conducting at Northwestern University, studying with primary teacher Dr. Mallory Thompson. While at Northwestern, Dr. Lowe guest conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He also assisted with the “Wildcat” Marching Band and the men’s basketball pep band.
