Dance Rhythms, Op. 58a

Wallingford Riegger

Dance Rhythms, Op. 58a was composed in 1954 for orchestra and then adapted by the composer for concert band. It is an impressive study in rhythm and orchestration with light-hearted mood and driving energy.

Wallingford Riegger (1885–1961) was an American composer who was born in Georgia and lived in New York. A gifted cellist, he was a member of the first graduating class of the Institute of Musical Art, later known as the Juilliard School, in 1907. He also studied in Germany. Riegger taught at Drake University and various colleges in New York State. He is well known for orchestral and modern dance music, and film scores. He died from a head injury incurred when he tripped over the leashes of two fighting dogs.
