Ding! Dong! Merrily on High

arr. Leif Strand, Olov Helge/adapted Jay Dawson

This carol is reputed to be French, dating back to the sixteenth century, with text originally in Latin. The original com poser is unknown. The vocal version is popular with children due to the onomatopoeia (ding dong – the word conveys the sound) and the breathless state achieved when singing the extended phrase, “Gloria ....... excelsis!”.

This version is instrumental, adapted by Jay Dawson for band from a Swedish vocal arrangement by Leif Strand and Olov Helge. Listen as a joyful burst of holiday sounds flows in unique rhythms “with a solid groove”.

Ding dong merrily on high,
In heav'n the bells are ringing:

Ding dong! Verily the sky Is riv'n with angel singing.

Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
