Entry of the Gladiators

Julius Fučík / trans. Marc Oliver

Entry of the Gladiators Julius Fučík (1872–1916) was a Czech composer and conductor of military bands. Sometimes known as the "Bohemian Sousa," he composed over 400 pieces. His marches are still played as patriotic music in the Czech Republic. His worldwide reputation rests primarily on "The Florentiner March" and “Entry” which was written while he was bandmaster for the 86th Infantry Regiment based in Sarajevo. The title reflects his interest in Roman history. A familiar arrangement of this piece known as "Thunder and Blazes" is universally associated with the appearance of the clowns in a circus performance.
