Folk Dances

Dmitri Shostakovich

Folk Dances is a single-movement work of light-hearted Russian folk dances. The string of tunes is combined in such a way that musical energy abounds and the spirit of folk dance can be easily imagined. The work is filled with joy and exuberance.

Shostakovich, in his early years, wrote music to serve the political needs of his country. He composed in a variety of styles using folk music, humor and many other techniques. He composed twelve symphonies along with numerous other works. He incurred government condemnation in 1948, but continued composing, including a number of works which surfaced after his death. Few composers have been as highly honored and respected by the music profession and public as has Shostakovich.
