Provence, from "Suite Française"

Darius Milhaud

Provence, from "Suite Française" The five parts of this suite are named after French provinces. The fifth movement, Provence , is a lively tune based on folk music of the area.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) fled Vichy France to California where he became a professor at Mills College in Oakland. He composed many works for American ensembles. In his program notes he argued that "you cannot describe music. You must listen it. That is what I ask very kindly of the listening public.”
