Celebrations

John Zdechlik

Celebrations was commissioned in 1988 by the Medalist Concert Band in Bloomington, Minnesota to commemorate their 20th anniversary. Two main themes are passed around the ensemble: The first uses fluid woodwind patterns with punctuating brass lines. The second is more reflective and grandiose. The two combine at the end to create a triumphant ending.

John Zdechlik (1937-2020) was an American composer and music educator. He taught at Century College in White Bear Lake, MN for 30 years until his retirement in 1997. While teaching, he also began composing primarily for concert bands. Arguably his most famous piece, Chorale and Shaker Dance, was written in 1972 and Zdechlik once said he has guest conducted it over 500 times. Other notable works by Zdechlik include Psalm 46, In Dulci Jubilo, and Z’s Blues.
