Rocky Point Holiday

Ron Nelson

Rocky Point Holiday is a wind-blown seaside resort on the coast of Rhode Island. Commissioned by and composed for the University of Minnesota Concert Band, this piece cleverly unites elements of jazz and classical styles.

Ronald Nelson (b. 1929) was born in Joliet, Illinois. He wrote his first composition at the age of 6. He conducted and arranged shows when attending Joliet Township High School where the bands (under the direction of Dr. Bruce Houseknecht) were famously large in number and full in sound. Nelson went on to study composition at Eastman School of Music with Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers.
