Shenandoah

arr. by Frank Ticheli

Shenandoah valley and river are located in Virginia. The folksong melody dates to the 19th century. The composer was inspired by the freedom and beauty of the folksong melody and by the natural images evoked by the words. Mr. Ticheli was especially taken with the river’s life-affirming energy and timelessness. The work’s mood ranges from quiet reflection through growing optimism to profound exaltation.

Frank Ticheli (b. 1958) was born in Monroe, LA. He received his doctoral and masters degrees in composition from the University of Michigan. He is well- known for his works for concert band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire. He lives in Los Angeles where he is a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California.
