A Tribute to Harry James

arr. by Sammy Nestico

A Tribute to Harry James Harry James (1916-1983) was an American swing band leader and trumpet virtuoso. He was born in Albany, Georgia into a circus family. He played for Benny Goodman and soon formed his own band which achieved remarkable heights featuring himself and vocalists Helen Forrest, Dick Haymes, Kitty Kallan and then-unknown Frank Sinatra. When the Big Band era ended he continued to perform, mostly in Las Vegas. Tonight’s selec- tions are “Ciribiribin” (James’ signature tune, based on an old Italian street song), “The Mole”, “You Made Me Love You”,” Trumpet Blues and Cantabile”.

Sammy Nestico (b. 1924) is a prolific composer and arranger of jazz and big band swing music. Educated at Duquesne University, he arranged for the Count Basie Orchestra, the US Air Force Band and US Marine Band in Washington DC. He has orchestrated countless works for major film, TV and recording studios.
