Sammy Nestico

"Cable Car" is inspired by the iconic cable cars of San Francisco, symbolizing the city's unique charm and vibrant atmosphere. The music evokes the experience of riding through the hilly streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling urban landscape. Nestico's composition for concert band captures the sense of adventure and joy associated with this quintessential San Francisco experience.

"Cable Car" opens with a rhythmic and energetic motif that immediately sets a cheerful and spirited tone. The arrangement highlights the interplay between different sections of the band, with brass and woodwinds exchanging melodic lines and rhythmic figures. Throughout the piece, Nestico incorporates playful and whimsical elements, reflecting the light-hearted nature of the composition.

Sammy Nestico (1924-2021) was a legendary American composer and arranger, best known for his work in the jazz and big band genres. Over his illustrious career, Nestico arranged music for the Count Basie Orchestra, the United States Air Force Band, and the United States Marine Band, among others.

Nestico had a long career in the film and television industry. As orchestrator, he worked on nearly seventy television programs,as an arranger for the 81st Academy Awards, as well as some Grammy Awards. He worked as an orchestrator and arranger for the film The Color Purple, and composed commercial jingles for Anheuser-Busch, Zenith, Ford Motor Company, Mattel Toys, Pittsburgh Paint, the National Guard, Dodge, Remington Bank, and Americard. In the late 1960s, Sammy worked as an arranger and orchestrator for Capitol Records. In a partnership with Billy May, Nestico was involved in the transcription, arranging, and re-recording of 630 big band songs originally recorded in the 1930s and 1940s.

Nestico also had a career in music education, teaching at the University of Georgia from 1998 to 1999, where he taught orchestration and conducted the studio orchestra. He directed music programs at Los Angeles Pierce College, Woodland Hills, California, Westinghouse Memorial High School, and Wilmerding, Pennsylvania. Nestico published nearly 600 numbers for school groups and many for professional big bands and his impact on the music world cannot be overstated.
