Concerto for Horn No. 1 in E-flat Major

Concerto for Horn No. 1 in E-flat Major is written in three movements (Allegro, Andante, Allegro) which are played without a break.

Richard Strauss (1864–1949) wrote this concerto when he was only a teen. It has become the most frequently performed horn concerto from the 19th century. Strauss’ father Franz was one of the leading horn players of the day, and the fact that Richard grew up with the sound of the horn in his house led to his exploration of the great potential of the horn as both a solo and orchestral instrument.

Strauss was a leading German composer who bridged the divide between the Romantic and early modern eras of music history. Born in Munich, he studied music from an early age. He is known for his operas, lieder, tone poems, and instrumental works.
