program notes by composition > d > Danzas Cubanas

Robert Sheldon composed Danzas Cubanas in memory of his friend and fellow band director Ubaldo Montesino. It is a set of three original and connected dance-like movements - the opening conga sets the mood, followed by a gentle son-salsa, closing with a fast-paced mambo. The piece celebrates the energy of the music and people of Cuba, characterized by infectious rhythms, colorful orchestration, and a blend of contrasting lyrical and energetic sections.
