Puerto Alegre
William E. Rhoads
Puerto Alegre (Port of Fun) is a beguine for band. A beguine is a dance, sim- ilar to a slow rumba, in which the accent is placed on the second eighth note of the first beat. Originating in the islands of Guadeloupe and Cuba, and in Martinique where it is a slow close dance with a roll of hips, the beguine became very modestly popular in the 1930s.
William Rhoads (b. 1966) received his B.M. in Music Composition and Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is active as an engineer/producer, copyist/arranger and composer in New York City.
