The Red Machine

The Red Machine was commissioned by the London-based Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards who play in the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The Guards’ reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the ?Red Machine.?

The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group, from the aggressive, machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavored waltz through the recapitulation, and vivace finale. Listeners may spot musical references to Holst (“The Planets”) and the chorale “Ein Feste Burg.” Cast in the fast–slow–fast structure of the Italian overture, the piece is described in the score notes as “a type of virtuoso concerto for band.”

Peter Graham (b.1958) studied at the University of Edinburgh and the University of London. He has worked as a freelance composer/arranger and editor, and as an arranger for the BBC. He has carved out a niche as an outstanding arranger for brass bands and a leading contemporary band composer. He has held posts as Music Associate/Conductor with the Black Dyke Band and composer-in-residence with Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards Band.
