Toccata by “Frescobaldi”
Gaspar Cassadó, arranged by Earl Slocum
Toccata by “Frescobaldi” This composition first appeared as Girolamo Frescobaldi’s Toccata in a collection of pieces by Spanish cellist and composer Gaspar Cassadó (1897–1966). Despite the attribution to the Italian composer who lived from 1583 to 1643, the piece is written in a style not even remotely related to his. Academic consensus now is that it was entirely written by Gaspar Cassadó.
Earl Slocum arranged it in 1956 for his University of North Carolina band. It was specially composed to be played by massed bands in the arena at the 1924 Wembley Empire Exhibition.
